The Problem of Shopping Bag Nowadays: Prestige?

When you bought a high-end things, which one the most important:
the things inside the paper bag or the paper bag itself?


When you do shopping in the store, you will got the identity paper bag from the brand. For example, when you shopping at ZARA, you will got the dark paper bag typical ZARA to help you bring all your things together. The same thing would happen if you do shopping at H&M. The white plastic bag with H&M's logo will coming with you and the very same thing will be happen if you do shopping at the branded store.

Then, the questions pop up in my head:

Is the paper bag really help you to carry your things?

As the person who loves to buy a things too, it should be fit enough for you to put all your things in a medium-sized paper bag. 



When you go to one store to another, you don't really need the paper bag from all the stores you came to. Because you could put all your things in one bag. 


Here's the example. You bought five t-shirts at H&M, then you bought three tank tops at ZARA. All you need is one bag from H&M. You don't need the paper bag from ZARA! Because the bag fit all your things. However, there are a lot of people who don't really aware about this. I assume a few things about this. Here's some of them.

👉 People bought the prestige of the brand 

Some brand has the prestigious value among people. Let say, ZARA, CHANEL, PRADA, and even H&M. When the people buy the product of ZARA, they should be feeling great yet prestigious. Not only that, they also urge to carry the paper bag to the entire mall to show people that they bought the product of ZARA. Because, who doesn't love to looking great in front of other people?
👉Branding
For example, if you buy the collection of ERDEM X H&M, you will feel exclusive, elegant, and beautiful. But this feeling only could only be obtained by consistency.   
Basically, brand identity is the message the consumer receives from the product, person, or thing

Branding is basically make the buyers feeling they're part of the brand. 


So, the brand basically has its own personality. Let consider a brand like a person. The person has the personality, whether it's fun, energetic, or humble. This impression cannot build by the person itself but shaped by other's opinion. In other words, a designer cannot “make” a brand – only the audience can do this. A designer forms the foundation of the brand

👉It's all Realized through Visual devices
So, the branding thing is wrapped all the brand and the corporate are all about. But, as a person, the brand needs to be identified by others. This is the function of logo. A logo identifies a company or product via the use of a mark, flag, symbol. As we are a visual creatures, the logo become an important thing. And the logo is the thing that's on the shopping/paper bag. This could be the reason why people would love to carry the paper bag of the brand, beacuse there's the logo of the brand which easy to identify the brand.


Oh, even I found there is someone selling out the luxury brands shopping bag.

  1. Aku setuju. Plastik dari toko ternama memang mendongkrak gengsi pemiliknya, haha. Akan tetapi, dari segi kepraktisan dan lingkungan, tentu lebih baik menolak plastik jika barang belanjaan kita muat dalam tas atau kantung yang dibawa sendiri. Kurang sreg aja kalau cuma beli satu kaus dan diberikan kantung bungkusan yang gede banget. :)

    1. Memang lebih baik menolak, namun banyak orang juga masih belum peduli tentang hal ini, Nad. Dan membawa tas sendiri bukan menjadi salah satu pilihan, malah justru agak aneh. Haha.
